UPSC CSE 2026 Prelims E-Admit Card Overdue; Commission Expected to Issue Within Days
With eight days to go for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, the admit card has not appeared on the Commission's website. Historical patterns suggest it is due any day.
With eight days to go for the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Preliminary Examination, the Commission is yet to release the e-admit card for over eight lakh registered candidates. The admit card was widely expected to appear in the first week of May, following UPSC's established practice of issuing the document two to three weeks before the exam date.
The UPSC What's New page as of May 15 shows no entry related to the CSE 2026 admit card. The dedicated examination page at upsc.gov.in remains a blank placeholder, last updated on February 10, 2022. The Commission's candidate portal also does not reflect any change as of the time of reporting.
This delay, while not unprecedented, has begun to draw attention as the exam date approaches. In previous cycles, UPSC has released the admit card for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination within a window of 10 to 21 days before the exam. In 2024, the CSE Prelims admit card was released on May 16 for a June 16 examination, a gap of 31 days. In 2023, it was released on May 15 for a May 28 exam, a gap of 13 days. In 2022, the admit card appeared on May 19 for a June 5 exam, a gap of 17 days. The current cycle, with the exam set for May 24 and the admit card still absent as of May 15, would fall at the shorter end of historical patterns if released in the coming days.
UPSC typically releases the e-admit card without prior announcement. The document appears directly on the What's New page and in the logged-in candidate portal under the e-admit card section. Candidates are advised to check both locations at least twice daily.
The admit card is a mandatory document for entry to the examination centre. Along with it, candidates must carry one photo identification document such as an Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport, or driving licence. The Commission has also specified that candidates should download the e-admit card in colour and ensure the photograph and signature are clearly visible. The e-admit card will carry the candidate's roll number, photograph, signature, category, date of birth, exam centre details, and a set of instructions.
Key instructions printed on the admit card include the prohibition of electronic devices inside the exam hall, including mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, and calculators. Candidates must report at the exam centre by the time specified on the admit card, typically one hour before the scheduled start of the examination. Latecomers are not permitted to enter the hall after the gates close.
Candidates who registered with PwBD status must also carry the disability certificate issued by the competent authority, as scribe arrangements and extra time provisions are verified at the centre.
The Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 is scheduled for May 24 across centres nationwide. It will be conducted in two shifts: Paper I (General Studies) from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM and Paper II (CSAT) from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Both papers are objective type with multiple choice questions. Paper I carries 200 marks, and Paper II also carries 200 marks. Candidates need to qualify both papers to be eligible for the Main Examination.
An estimated 8.2 lakh candidates have registered for this year's examination, a figure that has seen a modest year-on-year increase. The number of applicants has remained relatively stable in the range of 8 to 10 lakh in recent years, though the actual number of candidates who appear on exam day is typically 10 to 15 percent lower than the registration count.
For the latest updates, candidates can monitor the official UPSC website at upsc.gov.in or the candidate portal at upsconline.nic.in. The Commission does not issue individual notifications regarding the admit card. Once released, the document can be downloaded from both portals using the candidate's registration ID and date of birth.
This article will be updated as soon as the admit card is released.
